1. BRICS NU INTERNATIONAL SPRING SCHOOL TOOK PLACE AT URAL FEDERAL UNIVERSITY

 


On April 10-13 the international spring school for students and young researchers “BRICS Future: 2030” took place at Ural Federal University. The event was attended by the participants from Russia, Brazil, China, South Africa, Mexico, Germany, France, and Kazakhstan. The guests from partner universities worked together with UrFU degree-seeking and exchange students.

The event started with a series of lectures delivered by the experts in BRICS and global studies from Ural Federal University, The University of Pretoria and Russian International Affairs Council, and continued with two days of group work. The international groups worked on different scenarios of the sustainable economic development of BRICS countries, BRICS political strategy, BRICS human and urban development, as well as BRICS cooperation in higher education.

The scenarios developed by the participants and presented during the final day of the school will be published in the special edition of the InBRICS Newsletter to be printed by UrFU BRICS Studies Center, and will be made available for the decision-makers and stakeholders to adapt their strategies in order to achieve or avoid certain scenario.

2. MISIS INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOLS FOR BRICS STUDENTS

     

Russian National University of Science and Technology “MISIS” (Moscow, Russia) invites students from BRICS countries to take part in international summer schools to be organized in July 2017.

The school on materials and technologies will be held on July 15th – 29th, and will focus on important issues of the contemporary materials science, including materials for 3d-printing, biomaterials and materials for new energetics.

The summer school on computational materials design to be held on July 12th – 19th aims at providing students with an introduction to the use of thermodynamic, kinetic and ab initio modeling to solve real problems in multicomponent chemical systems.

“Mainstreams of IT: Big Data and Project Management” international summer school will concentrate on analytical processing of big data tools (R, Python, Data Discovery etc.), Hadoop ecosystem and will include analysis of cross-industry solutions from leading companies. The school will be organized in the period of July 15th – 29th.

The deadline for application is May 15th, 2017.

3. FUDAN CENTRE FOR BRICS STUDIES TO ORGANIZE A SUMMER SCHOOL

     

2017 BRICS Summer Program will be held from July 6 to August 3 at the Center for BRICS Studies, Fudan University. Shanghai Summer School (BRICS Program) is a short-term educational program that provides an opportunity for the undergraduates, postgraduates and junior researchers from BRICS countries to stay and study in Shanghai, China for one month with a purpose of getting a better understanding of China and of the BRICS cooperation. There are two main courses the students would take: “Global Governance and Cooperation among BRICS" and “China’s Politics and Diplomacy”. Famous Chinese and foreign scholars and experts on BRICS Studies will give interactive lectures and organize discussions. The program is also supplemented with various activities, such as a visit to th e New Development Bank, a Colloquium on BRICS Pragmatic Cooperation and a rich cultural program.

BRICS school has been held since 2014, and has attracted many students and junior researchers from all BRICS countries. The overall goal of the program is to improve the communication among students and young scholars from the BRICS countries and to enhance people- to-people exchanges in order to further consolidate public support for cooperation. We are looking forward to having excellent students from the BRICS countries to take part in this program.

4. BRICS NU ECONOMICS PRIORITY FIELD HAS BEEN DISCUSSED AT HSE, MOSCOW

     

The meeting of faculties and officers from six Russian universities engaged in the economics knowledge field within BRICS NU was held on the 6th of March 2017 in National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow. The meeting has been mainly focused upon the discussion of the development of joint educational programmes. Six participant universities agreed to develop joint proposal on three master's programs and identified several research topics for further submission of them to the International Thematic Group (ITG) on economics. 5. WORKSHOP “BRICS AND THE MULTIPOLAR WORLD” HELD AT JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA UNIVERSITY, INDIA

 

Over 85 students took part in the one-day workshop ‘BRICS and the Multipolar World’ held at Jamia Millia Islamia University on February 1st, 2017

A well-known Indian political scientist, Prof Manoranjan Mohanty delivered keynote lecture on ‘BRICS’ Vision of the Global Future’. Eminent academics and government officials, experts on BRICS countries, have their talks on a variety of topics related to BRICS, including:

·      BRICS and other groupings such as the MERCOSUR, IBSA, SAARC, SCO, the Eurasian Economic Community

·      The New Development Bank and AIIB set up by BRICS

·      Does BRICS actually contribute to an alternative world order

·      BRICS and globalization

·      BRICS and multilateralism

·      Evolution of BRICS and

·      Aid agencies and trade between BRICS countries

The workshop ended with Ambassadors Virendra Gupta and Bhojwani speaking in detail on role of India in the BRICS as well as on the political and economic changes which had occurred globally over the last decade and which would certainly affect relationships between the BRICS countries.



6. BRICS NU ITG ON BRICS STUDIES TO GATHER IN SEPTEMBER

 
BRICS NU International Thematic Group (ITG) on BRICS Studies will meet on September 16th, 2017 at Higher School of Economics, Saint-Petersburg to discuss further steps in establishing joint master programmes in BRICS studies. The participants consider BRICS studies to be a new emerging discipline and will focus upon both organizational and substantial aspects of the programme creation.

7. BRICS NU PARTICIPANT WILL LAUNCH ONLINE POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN SOCIOLOGY

 
A number of Brazilian universities – the BRICS NU participants – initiated an online-based programme in BRICS sociology. The universities from other BRICS countries have already joined the initiative.

The course will address  the major issues related to Social Stratification and Inequality in the BRICS countries. The classes will examine different dimensions of Sociology of Stratification focusing upon the BRICS countries, with special attention to Theory of Stratification and Inequality, as well as, methodology of research in this field. For that, the course will be based on the book published in cooperation with four countries: Peilin, L; Scalon,C; Gorshkov, M. K.; Sharma,K.L..;  Handbook Social Stratification in the BRIC Countries. Singapore, World Scientific. 2013.

The course will consist in 17 classes on a range of topics, starting from stratification and change up to income and educational inequalities in the BRICS countries.
